Florence House October Newsletter

8th November 2012

Hi Everyone,

What a fab time we have all had throughout October. We have had great fun with our music and movement activity, our residents love using the tambourines and maracas, the noisier the better it seems! We have also started to hold a tea dance once a week where we have a good old sing a long and dance to a variety of music with a drop of sherry or lager. After a discussion with residents we decided it would be a good idea to theme our tea dances every now and then so we started off with “The Swinging Sixties” We sang and danced to a selection of sixties music and had little posies of flowers which they loved, many of them put them in their hair. They blew me away with their quick answers to the sixties quiz (that I needed the
computer to prepare!) I was very impressed at the interest they showed in wanting to get the answers
correct. We also discussed what the most popular toys were at that time, the inventions of the 60’s and the price of items e.g did you know:-

The average house price was £2,530

Loaf of bread cost 5p

Coronation Street first arrived in 1960

BBC2 went on air in 1964 and was the first channel to have colour in 1967

On a more serious note the first heart transplant was performed in 1967

Neil Armstrong first man on the moon in 1969

These are just a few of the things we discussed

Of course we played our fair share of bingo this month giving out small prizes to our winners. This has been great fun especially when they want a recap of numbers after 80 balls have been drawn! Phew!! Residents have done regular exercises with ball games which they seem to enjoy. During our arts and crafts activities they have iced and decorated small sponge
cakes and then proudly eaten them at supper time. It was great fun making bird treats on another occasion especially when we took them into the garden to put them on the bird tables and various bushes. None of us can decide who enjoyed them the most the birds or the squirrels!

What do you think of the floral table decorations in the dining room? Don’t they look lovely? That was another arts/crafts session that is enjoyed by all as soon as they sit down for their meals. We have taken photos during many of these activities which we will display over the Christmas period for you all to see. On behalf of management, staff and residents can I please say a massive Thank You for all your support with our activities and fund raising. We have had donations of gifts and monies as well a support with our various raffles. This is very much appreciated and we can now start planning a fabulous Christmas
for our residents at Florence House. Once again many thanks
